Dichotomy

Howdy, y'all! It's Sarah here, and it's finally MY turn to blog while I wait for the dryer to stop running. Tonight we drove downtown to check out the flooding in Des Moines. Absolutely amazing the power of water. In Utah, we lived in constant awareness of the need to conserve water. The neighbors even came over to comment on our apparent water waste if we watered our lawn one too many times during the week because somehow the power went off to our lil sprinkler system controller and it went to its default settings rather than our "conserve the water and only for so long on such and such days at these specific times" setting. In Utah we taught the kids to conserve water and not waste it on the playground drinking fountain by splashing your friends. In Iowa, we're facing a "500-year flood"--a flood that only happens one time every 500 years. The sandbagging of EVERYTHING downtown is incredible. You can't get into any building anywhere near the river unless you climb sandbag mountains to get in. Water is a curse here right now. Last night we drove to a nearby farm town, Adel. Adel is flooding as well. On top of all the towns flooding, hundreds, if not thousands, of farms in the state are flooding. We drove by field after field that had standing water. The poor lil corn plants! My mom said jokingly said to me on the phone today after I talked with her about it all that they should have planted rice this year instead of corn. Last night we had another 2 inches of rain...devastating amount of water for the already incredibly swollen rivers and creeks and lakes and more. All this to say, it's so strange, the dichotomy of having lived in drought and now floods. We're really super, extremely, and amazingly blessed. Our house, we've come to realize, is in a great location. With no looming threat to our property at this time, we just are blessed. Okay, I've rambled WAY too much. We go on vacation in a week, and I'm sooooooooo excited to go to Maine again! We just love it, and we really, really CANNOT wait to see family again! We miss everyone so much.
