Iowa Floods, revisited

This picture, taken this morning, gives a good idea of just how high the flood waters were in June. The picture was taken from the middle of a bridge over the Des Moines River, looking East toward the Simon Estes Ampitheater. The river is down in the normal banks right now. On June 12th, we came down to the river, and it was up to the very top of the planters above the grass hill, where the line of trees is in front of the Embassy Suites. The high stone wall, the stage, the hillside, the lower line of streetlights, and most of the arch were all underwater. The water was right up to the top of the bridge in the background. Back then, it was hard to look at the water and imagine what was underneath.
